Commandos Destination Berlin



In total contrast with what lies ahead, Commandos 3 starts out easy enough. The two tutorial missions are--with a single exception--a smart introduction to the key members of the commando squad and their highly specialized abilities. As in Commandos 2, the interiors of buildings are fully 3D, and it's possible to smoothly rotate the camera with the mousewheel. While the 3D segment isn't the best-looking part of the game, this extra control makes it fairly convenient to navigate the cramped rooms. The starter scenario gently walks you through the basics of the interface, which differs significantly in style from those in typical strategy or action games. Except when manually set to provide cover fire, the commandos don't act without explicit commands. Moving one character at a time is simple enough, though the lack of hotkeys for specific weapons or abilities becomes a challenge in tight spots. The tutorial's one notable failing is that it doesn't mention that the abilities menu hides choices until it's clicked on, like the one for weapons, which confused more than one of us when looking for the spy's "distract" ability.The prologue is a taste of how, with one mouse click, the Green Beret's speed and deadly knife strike can be overwhelming in close quarters. And within the span of 15 minutes or so, you'll meet the other core commando members (whose ranks have been distilled from Commandos 2 to the core group): The sniper has the longest range of any friendly unit, the sapper is an expert with bombs and heavy weapons, the spy can disguise himself with the uniforms of German soldiers and officers, and the thief is fast and capable of climbing up walls and other objects. The sixth member, the diver, appears only once, in the third campaign. One advantage of having the number of commandos pared down from the previous game is that there's no getting confused about what each one is for, and if you ever get really stumped in a mission, solving the situation can be just a matter of stepping back and thinking about the special abilities of the commandos assigned to a specific scenario.

The mystery of mummy



Sherlock Holmes: Mystery of the Mummy is an adventure game replete with puzzles, many of them timed, which takes place in its entirety in a privately owned Egyptian museum. The museum also serves as the impressive residence of Lord Montcalfe, a student of the antiquities, who has seemingly passed his passion for archeology, as well as other traits, on to his loving daughter Elisabeth.But, alas, Lord Montcalfe has come up missing and his adoring daughter has thoughtfully engaged Sherlock, her distant cousin, to find her missing father. You, as Sherlock, become a part of the unfolding mystery solo, sans Watson, as you enter the museum in search of the missing Lord. Be aware that puzzle content and frequency becomes increasingly more difficult as you progress in the game. Good luck, Sherlock!



The puzzles might seem appealing to longtime fans of traditional adventure games, but unfortunately, the game's graphics probably won't seem appealing to anyone other than adventure-game die-hards. Mystery of the Mummy runs at a fixed resolution of 640x480, though from the looks of it, the game itself was designed at an even lower resolution, because nearly everything in Mystery of the Mummy looks blurry and unfocused. It doesn't help matters that Mystery of the Mummy's color palette is generally dark and drab--especially when some of the game's puzzles require you to hunt for hidden items and switches. Considering that most modern computer games have begun to use 3D graphics, it's safe to say that Mystery of the Mummy would have, and should have, looked better with a fully 3D graphics engine.

HITMAN BLOOD MONEY



This is the fourth game in the Hitman series, but previous experience with the past games isn't assumed or required. In fact, you'll probably be more impressed with the game if you've never played one of these before. Returning players will be in for a comfortably familiar experience. The previous games' stories are alluded to during the course of this one, in which 47 discovers that he and his employer are being threatened by some other mysterious agency. He'll learn more of the rival agency's motives as he completes his own jobs, all leading up to a surprising and climactic conclusion. The starting mission leads you by the nose through one of 47's typical assignments--to eliminate a shady theme park operator, whose negligence once cost the lives of many innocent people. This man, called the Swing King, even entered the drug business in the wake of his theme park's collapse. 47's employer has asked that a photo of a deceased loved one be the last image that the crook ever sees...but when you finally reach him, he's just this sad worm of a man who grovels at 47's feet. Despite the number of armed thugs you'll need to get through before putting the Swing King out of his misery, this mission is easy, provided you follow the step-by-step instructions you're given. Subsequent missions are substantially tougher and less linear, but this first one still is representative of the types of moody, affecting scenarios you'll encounter in the game.
There are more than a dozen missions in all, and most of them are set somewhere in the United States, such as a Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, an Egyptian-themed Las Vegas casino, a rehab clinic in Northern California, a stately riverboat traveling the Mississippi, a posh Los Angeles suburb, and more. The game does a great job of realizing each of these different settings, making them feel appropriately large, complex, and alive. Mardi Gras is particularly impressive, its streets jam-packed with people partying. All of these places tend to be filled with armed guards as well as civilians, so you'll need to exercise caution in order to take out your targets and escape undetected. However, if you slip up (or deliberately blow your cover), you can always try to shoot your way out. As in the previous games, Hitman: Blood Money rewards stealth and careful planning, but if you want to try to run and gun your way through the levels, you have that option. You can instantly switch from the default behind-the-back perspective to a first-person viewpoint if you prefer, and the game lets you use a whole bunch of different, realistically modeled real-world pistols, rifles, and submachine guns against your enemies. Of course, it's possible to finish most missions in Hitman: Blood Money without squeezing off a single round, if you're careful and observant.

In many cases it's possible to avoid getting blood on your hands altogether, by arranging an accident for your target--say, by causing something very heavy to drop on his head. Figuring out these trickier, cleaner kills is naturally gratifying, and it also tends to earn you a higher ranking (and more money) once you've escaped and your mission is accomplished. As in the previous games, planning your strike is easy thanks to a GPS-style real-time map that's accessible at the touch of a button, which shows you all other characters in the vicinity at the normal difficulty setting, including your targets. Tougher settings show you fewer characters on the map, make enemies more lethal, and also limit your ability to save your progress during a mission. Even so, between the map, your objectives list, and the ability to purchase more intel if you need it, even the most intimidating missions become solvable. It helps that 47 is much tougher than an average man, and can withstand a lot of gunshot wounds before finally succumbing in a red-tinged, slow-motion haze.
As in the previous games, your enemies' artificial intelligence unfortunately doesn't hold up to close scrutiny, but at least it puts on a good show if you don't start messing around. When you're just observing, you'll find that the AI in Blood Money does a convincing job. You'll see characters chatting or lounging about, while guards casually patrol the premises. Someone might stop for a bathroom break or go outside for a smoke, not realizing the danger of splitting off from the crowd.

The two men and these artifacts are linked by past events; Sieg killed Delacroix's lover, and now Delacroix is hoping to use these magical artifacts to bring his beloved back to life, even if it means causing wanton destruction along the way. The game uses cutscenes between missions to advance the plot, but the silly dialogue and convoluted scene direction make following the story more difficult than it needs to be. Kung Fu PandaThis game is based on the upcoming animated movie that chronicles the adventures of Po the Panda as he strives for kung fu mastery.Activision and Luxoflux/XPEC/Beenox deliver another solid, child-oriented game based on Dreamworks’ upcoming Kung Fu Panda.As expected, the game stars the titular kung fu Panda – Master Po. Master Po has lofty goals of being a stellar, kung fu-busting fighter but unfortunately for him, he’s a bit too clumsy to achieve his goal. Fortunately, Master Po is being trained by Master Shifu, along five other Kung Fu masters (known as the Furious Five). When Tai Lung, the movie and game’s villain, escpaes from the Chorh Gom prison, Master Po has to show off what he’s learned, take on Tai Lung’s army, and eventually the man himself. The game, which I imagine follows the movie loosely, is quite humorous and often quite charming.As an action platformer, Kung Fu Panda is heavily based on light combat. Master Po can jump and double jump, as well as pull off fast and power attacks and the ability to use weapons from the environment. These are in addition to his special attacks, which include Panda Quake (belly flop with an aftershock), Iron Belly (bounce forward and roll into enemies), and Panda Stumble (a speed bounce forward). The game lets you collect coins, which you can use to improve Po’s fighting ability by bettering his health or the damage a move does. Further, the game lets you unlock certain outfits in the game, which should prove fun for younger gamers.While most of your time will be spent battling enemies as Po, that’s not all you’ll do. You’ll occasionally play as the other members of the Furious Five, fight bosses, complete quick action scenes, play minigames, and complete side quests. In addition, the game includes a multiplayer mode for up to four players. You’ll find Hong Kong (try to get three similar icons in a row), Shanghai (a Kung Fu Panda themed mahjong, undoubtedly aimed at parents), Po Go (a memory game) and a more traditional four-player combat game. The trick is that the multiplayer features are unlocked by playing the singleplayer version, although this shouldn’t be difficult even for kids.The game’s soundtrack fits it perfectly and complements the visuals quite nicely. The sound effects are more than adequate, although they don’t particularly stand out one way or the other. Although Activision did not hire most of the movie’s big stars (Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, etc) for the game, the soundalikes they hired sound remarkably similar to the movie’s stars. It’s clear that you aren’t really listening to Jack Black at times, but for the most part, it’s difficult if even possible to tell.Overall, Kung Fu Panda is another well-made kid-focused licensed game from Activision. The gameplay manages to switch things up and be sufficiently challenging to engage older gamers, while keeping the core gameplay accessible to younger gamers. With solid gameplay and a great presentation, Kung Fu Panda is easy to recommend to fans of the movie or parents looking to entertain their kids with a robust yet accessible action platformer.

Contract J.A.C.k


Contract J.A.C.K.Pity poor Cate Archer. Everyone's favorite superspy in paisley has been replaced with a man in the latest addition to the No One Lives Forever franchise, a prequel called Contract J.A.C.K. The move is a timely one, seeing as the comely female version of James Bond by way of Austin Powers hasn't been wowing consumers accustomed to the stereotypical testosterone-heavy shooter. It's just a shame that developer Monolith couldn't have come up with something fresher and more involving, as the new release is merely a mediocre shoot-'em-up that can be finished in four hours.Even in that limited time frame, Contract J.A.C.K. never takes off. You portray "ruthless assassin" John Jack (the J.A.C.K. of the title is also an acronym for Just Another Contract Killer), a thug working the other side of the street from Archer and her goody-two-shoes comrades in UNITY. Just weeks before the beginning of the events recounted in No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, he gets forced into an assignment by arch-villain Dmitrij Volkov of HARM. But the potentially interesting angle of facing off against your old friends has been dumped for a hackneyed plot where Jack fights a group of Italian ne'er-do-wells called Danger Danger for the rights to a mad scientist currently dwelling on the moon.Not being able to take on the likes of Ms. Archer and her mentor Bruno is a letdown from the very start. Even more disappointing, the sense of fun that permeated the series has been replaced by a guns-first philosophy. In some ways this is good, as the game gets right to the point in a way that its predecessors did not, but most often it proves simply numbing. All seven multipart missions deal strictly with shooting your way through waves of enemies from start to finish. You slaughter hired goons to escape a trap laid by a rival. You slaughter HARM agents that Volkov has sent to test your mettle. You slaughter Czechoslovakian soldiers guarding a rocket base. You slaughter Danger Danger storm troopers in secret headquarters, Italian villas, and even on the moon.These are some interesting locales, particularly the moon base and a climactic fight in space reminiscent of the final scene in the Bond movie Moonraker. The lead-up to the final battle in the Italian countryside allows you to drive a scooter equipped with machine-gun cannons and is very scenic, set amidst rolling hills and a canal. Most settings, however, are pretty bland. The succession of Czech military installations consists of faceless warehouses awash in crates, and the huge village at the end of the game is like a maze of dead ends and doors that don't open. But no matter where you are, you never have time to soak up any atmosphere, since you're too busy bathing in blood.And you get pretty bloody in Contract J.A.C.K. Aside from regular pauses to search for ways to open blocked doors (and pad out the running time of this brief shooter), there is nothing here but splattering bad guys all over the landscape. There is no stealth, no lock-picking, no playing around with the lethal hairpin, banana, and other nifty devices that UNITY's Santa's Workshop weapons lab provided Cate in the first two games. There are no conversations worthy of eavesdropping, no note trails to be pieced together to tell amusing side stories. Even the swinging '60s atmosphere has been all but eradicated. If not for old cars scattered through the levels and the great title song reminiscent of the classic Peter Gunn theme, the game could be taking place in the present day.

Delta FOrce Black Hawk Down


Novalogic's Delta Force was originally one of the foremost tactical shooter series in computer gaming. However, if last year's Task Force Dagger is any indication, the series is in decline. The newest game in the series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, focuses on the UN intervention in Somalia in the 1990s, as portrayed in the popular novel and motion picture Black Hawk Down. The new Delta Force game makes some improvements to the series, but it's difficult to take seriously, especially considering some of the game's action sequences, which resemble old arcade games more than they do actual military operations.Black Hawk Down is loosely inspired by missions undertaken by elements of Delta Force, the US 75th Ranger Regiment, the 10th Mountain Division, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The game is also filled with real-world vehicles and weapons, but don't let that fool you. Black Hawk Down is mostly a straightforward, simplistic action game with some real-world trappings.The game's first single-player mission provides a good idea of what you can expect from Black Hawk Down. It lifts ideas from the movie and throws them together in an unrealistic and clumsy fashion. The mission itself resembles a rail shooter, an arcade-style shooting game in which you're forced to move along a predetermined path while shooting any enemies in your way. For whatever reason, developers insisted on using this idea over and over. In the first mission, you take part in a rescue operation for a UN convoy that's come under attack in the countryside. You operate a .50-caliber machine gun on one of a group of humvees that blithely drive right into hordes of enemy foot soldiers and vehicles approaching from all sides instead of slowing to properly engage the enemy, stopping, or taking an alternate route. You have no control over the foolish humvee drivers, but instead simply have to blast each new target that appears.Once you've finished this shooting-gallery segment--and most of the game seems like a glorified shooting gallery, since Somali gunmen will often stand in neat little rows --you run on foot to a small enemy camp to snipe more bad guys. Then, it's a return to more rail shooter action, as you use a minigun mounted on a Black Hawk helicopter to slaughter more unthinking enemies. All this in the span of 5 or 10 minutes.Anyone looking for a realistic military simulation will be very disappointed with Black Hawk Down. But if you're looking for a simple, old-fashioned shooter, you may enjoy parts of it, assuming you can put up with some major problems. The single-player mission goals often seem contrived or repetitive, and the campaign as a whole seems disjointed and amateurish. It's poorly balanced too--most missions are far too easy, but a few require endless and endlessly frustrating retries. The missions are also unoriginal. Understandably, they lift ideas from the Black Hawk Down book and film, but without doing them any justice. One mission even attempts, however poorly, to re-create the Omaha Beach landing sequence from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, of all things.As in previous Delta Force games, Black Hawk Down's AI is extremely poor. The supposedly "elite" Delta Force and Ranger troops shoot each other, push you into the line of fire, and repeatedly miss targets literally right in front of them. Their aim is so atrocious that they can actually walk right past an enemy in a narrow tunnel and not hit their target. The Somali fighters are just as bad. At point-blank range, these militia soldiers often turn away from you and shoot a nearby wall instead. So, it's basically up to you to play Rambo, running around and shooting all the sitting ducks. In fact, the game even keeps score for you--you can expect to kill more than 1,500 Somalis during the campaign.Minimum - Pentium III 500 MHz equivalent, 192MB RAM, Direct X Version 8.1+, Direct 3D video card with 32MB, Windows Compatible soundcard, 4X or Greater CDRom

Delta Force Xtreme


Novalogic’s new shooter, Delta Force Xtreme faced an uphill battle. Note to developers…putting incremental numbers behind a game's title or inventing some sort of story-related subtitle is a much better idea than putting the word "Xtreme" in the title. We almost expected to be fighting global terror on a skateboard or BMX bike. Funny thing is, that's not too far off the mark.The very first mission of the first campaign (of three included) drops you into the driver’s seat of a buggy armed with a machine gun (controlled by your AI team-mates). The vehicle controls are awkward, allowing you to turn with the strafe keys or by pointing the mouse in the direction you want to go, a la Halo. It would have sufficed to have one or the other, but having both means your vehicle will appear to have perpetual alignment problems. A better idea would have been to use the mouse to look around while driving, since you can't look up or down, forcing the camera into useless positions when driving up or down hills.Driving a buggy might not be too many people’s idea of "xtreme", but soon afterwards we ran across a dirt bike, something so oddly out of place that we nearly laughed to see it. We hopped aboard, feeling like the game had transformed into a ATV Offroad Fury spin-off. Can the player perform a Can-Can or a Superman in Delta Forxe Xtreme, all while fighting off the forces of evil?! Turns out that you can’t, and that riding a bike while toting guns feels downright silly. At first."At first" is the key, because once you get used to what the developers did, it starts to seem less and less ridiculous and more just a part of their vision. In the course of the game’s three campaigns, each comprising five to ten different missions, Delta Force Xtreme walks a delicate line between realism and arcade game play. What’s really strange is the fact that about halfway through the first campaign, we actually began to enjoy it.Game play is uneven. For example, one well-placed shot can kill you-- that's fairly realistic. However, the enemies typically can't hit anything unless the target is at point blank range. This display of laughable, Storm-Trooper-grade marksmanship is mixed with occasional sniper savants who can pick you off cleanly from 500 meters (maybe it was beginner's luck… yeah, right). When you do eventually die, you are given two options, to just continue (start a new life, mission in progress) and give up whatever experience points you've earned or restart the entire mission. Experience points aren't nearly as useful as you might think, by the way. They serve as more a generic score and are not, unfortunately, used to improve attributes or anything else.The game’s use of unlimited continues gives it a real arcade feel, but we are sorry to report that using a continue doesn’t restart the mission right where you left off-- the player must go back to the insertion point at the beginning of the map or start at the last completed objective. This translates into a great deal of hiking to get back to the battle. This can be really troublesome if you had to protect someone or your team is getting mauled-- whatever's happening may be long done by the time you hoof it back to the fray. Plus, some of the missions are so tricky or just plain long that you won't want to restart.Thankfully there's really only one dreaded escort mission in the game, filled with the usual morons who run right into the line of fire ahead of the player. We were forced to restart that mission several times in order to complete it to our satisfaction.Weapon selection features four machine guns: the M4 w/scope, M16 with M203 RPG over/under config, M249 SAW and the HK MP5 SD. In addition, there are two sniper rifles, the standard bolt-action, and the .50 M82 Barrett, a sidearm, and other goodies like grenades (frag, flash, and smoke), anti-armor rockets, sachel charges, and Claymore mines. Most of the time you can pick whatever guns you want, but some missions inexplicably limit the selection to only one or two specific weapons. It’s frustrating having to shoot through open sights on the M16 over long distances when the Barrett would have done the job better.Sniping with any weapon is fairly forgiving, and you get extra points for a headshot. While your stupid teammates rush headlong into a leadstorm, the best bet for players is to get a perch and pick off bad guys from a distance.This brings us to one of the game’s glaring faults: poor squad control. Your team-mates, to put it bluntly, do whatever the hell that they want, whenever they want, and sometimes don't join the fray when you'd really appreciate a little help. The ability to set waypoints and/or assign roles or actions to the support characters would have been a welcome addition. Setting up cross-fires and choke points, then luring bad guys into a massacre would have been really fun, but unfortunately for most of the game you’re pretty much on your own.Despite these failings, Delta Forxe Xtreme still manages to be fairly immersive. For example, there was a point where this reviewer went prone underneath an armored personnel carrier to avoid enemy fire. Bullets ricocheted off the metal body realistically. The sonic assault alone inspired a sense of near panic and the desire to quickly silence the suppressive fire.Online play is spotty. There is no LAN functionality, which is a pretty big letdown, but internet play is possible via NovaWorld. Pirates be on notice: the game registers your CD key when you log on, so don’t get any foolish ideas about playing form a copied or downloaded disc. The up side of the registration process is that you don't need the CD in the drive to play, which we liked.Processor: 1.4 GHz (Pentium IV 400 MHz Bus or Athlon 266 MHz Bus) Video Card: 128 MB, 3D accelerated, DirectX 9 compatible, equivalent with HW-T&L (Hardware Transform & Lightning) and 24-bit Z-buffer System RAM: 512MB Ram (PC133 or Faster) Hard Disk Space: 1.2 GB free hard disk space plus space for saved games (additional space required for Windows swap-file and DirectX 9.0 installation) CDRom: 16X Speed CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 compatible sound card Supported Operating Systems: Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City StoriesLiberty City Stories tells the tale of one Toni Cipriani, a regular-type mob guy who did a good deed for the head of the Leone crime family, Salvatore Leone. Toni had to go away for awhile, but the heat's died down, and he's back on the job in Liberty City, maintaining his loyalty to Sal while wiping out the family's enemies in droves along the way. As you ascend to become Salvatore's right-hand man, you'll start and finish gang wars with other mafia types, a few triads, the yakuza...pretty much all of the usual suspects are present.If you're familiar with the various mafia presences over the course of the past three GTA games, you'll recognize a few of the names and faces here. But the story stands alone and doesn't require you to remember the various cast members. That's a good thing, because the mafia characters in the other GTA games have been largely forgettable. The game's storyline really isn't up to par with the console installments in the series, because very little actually happens. Even potential plot points are squandered, like when Toni finally becomes a made man but a bad cutscene doesn't actually show the ceremony. The game's mission path doesn't deviate into crazy territory, and most of the characters are fairly lifeless. There are no enigmatic weirdos like Truth, the crazy hippie from San Andreas, or Steve Scott, the ----o director from Vice City, to break up the heavier-handed mafia tasks. This dulls the game's personality, preventing its characters and events from becoming as memorable as we've come to expect from GTA games and their excellent storylines.If you stick to the missions and don't mess around too much, you can finish the game's story mode in 10 to 12 hours. But the deceptive game-progress counter will only report around 40 percent completion if you stick close to the missions and don't do much else. The game has some rampage side missions and the standard pizza delivery, vigilante, taxi service, and ambulance missions, too. You can seek out ringing pay phones to get into street races. You can report to car lots to sell cars or motorcycles by test-driving vehicles for prospective consumers. And, of course, there are 100 hidden packages to find. If you get into all this optional stuff, there's a lot more city to see, and plenty of different cars to see it in.

Impossible Creatures


The single-player campaign that tells this story is lengthy, challenging, and engaging, offering a variety of objectives within most every mission, a good number of surprises, and plenty of amusing cutscenes. The campaign is probably the best part of the game. Your average RTS campaign always starts you off with weak units and limited technology and then gives you access to more powerful stuff as the missions wear on; Impossible Creatures is no different, but the way you acquire new and better stuff over the course of the missions is pretty novel. Specifically, you'll need to use Rex and his tranquilizer rifle to "tag" new animals for their genetic material, and you'll need to use Lucy to steal plans for new technology from your enemies. Since you'll usually get several new creatures per mission, you'll always be looking forward to which of the game's 50 or so stock creatures you'll find next and what sorts of bizarre yet effective hybrids you can make as a result. So by mixing genes with different animals gives you various results and either weaker or powerful creatures.
